First dates

Three years ago last week, Dietrich and I went on our first date.  We met at the gym where I was a trainer at the time.  We had one of our first conversations when he ordered a pie from my short-lived baking business for Thanksgiving. From November until March we had a number of short, sweet and sometimes awkward conversations.  He spent some time in Brazil and we emailed.  He came home right around my 27th birthday and asked me out after my birthday brunch.  We went to Little Tampico that night.  We had a lot to talk about, and I wasn't overwhelmed with nerves like I usually am in those sort of situations.  (Maybe it was the margaritas?)  Everything about it just felt pleasantly natural and relaxed.

Later that week we had a day date and rode bikes on West Cliff and went tide pooling.

Shortly there after we took a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium together.

We developed little routines in our early courtship.  I would go over to his house after we worked out and he would barbecue us burgers.  We would eat them on the deck and soak in the spring sun. We took sunset bike rides and admired the scenery together.  It's a magical time to remember.

The beginning.

On Housework

Print by Amber Mintert via etsy

I often feel conflicted about housework.  On some occasions I get the cleaning bug, and am really fired up about doing my household chores.  Those are rewarding times, but unfortunately they are few and far between.

Most weeks when the weekend rolls around the last thing I want to do is motivate to do a few household tasks, yet I find it hard to relax and enjoy my weekend amidst a unkept home, knowing that those chores must be somewhere in my near future.   I think it may be a slight form of obsessive compulsiveness.

I have tried many tactics to outsmart my compulsion, including doing a little bit of work on week mornings, and when that didn't work, week nights.  I tried just addressing chores as I notice them, no matter what day or time it may be - I'm not that type.  My latest tactic is to do the bare minimum, and let all else slide until I can't stand it anymore.

I'm wondering, what are your thoughts about keeping your house clean, and how do you do accomplish it (if you do)?

P.S.  When I do enjoy cleaning on occasion, I love the tips from this website, especially the cleaning checklists.  I like following a list.

Bookshelves are done!

The bookshelves that I have long been threatening to blog about are finally done!  Well, almost. But after putting in a little bit of work on many weekends they are finally ready for their internet unveiling.  Read on to see more pictures of the process.

Happy weekend

Happy weekend!  I don't have much planned for this weekend (other than work).  After the last few fabulous and fun-filled weekends of celebrating my birthday, I'm delighting in one that's not planned.  I plan to do as little or as much as I feel like doing at the moment.

How cute are these baby owls?

I love this collection of novel beginnings.  {via 101 cookbooks favorites list}

This video of grandparents playing with photo booth warms my heart. (Thanks for sharing Hilary!)

Have a happy weekend!

Lifeguard On Duty

I stumbled across the book "Lifeguard On Duty"  this weekend.

It's a collection of photographs of lifeguards by Matt Albiani, a photographer I am now enamored with.

According to this article, his next project is college rowers.

I love his photographs, and the subjects certainly aren't terrible to look at either.

Today is my 30th birthday.

Last night we drank champagne, worked on our bookshelves, ate cheese and crackers, and watched Bridesmaids.

This morning I put cream in my coffee, looked at short hair styles, and inspired by my birthday mailer from Sephora I treated myself to some new makeup.

Ever since reading this post at A CUP OF JO I have been wanting to try her product picks for feeling gorgeous.  Normally I throw away all those birthday promotions that you get in the mail, but when I saw my gift from Sephora was a free Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Duo with any purchase I was motivated to use it, and naturally I bought the Bare Escentuals foundation.  Added bonus - by entering the promo code "elle4u" when I checked out I got a free 1-year subscription to Elle magazine!

I love magazines.

A good start to my 31st year.

Colored Denim

I'm starting to warm up to the trend of colored denim.

I think I could start off with a pair of nude jeans

Then I could warm up to a pair in my favorite shade of sea foam green.

I could graduate to this bright pink pair.

And these are just fun to look at!

Moving Furniture

Winding down at my tiny party

One of the hilarious things that we talked about at my tiny party was the trials and tribulations of moving heavy furniture upstairs with your significant other.  All of us happen to live in two story buildings and have experienced the culmination of team work, strength, strategy and masterful communication that comes along with moving a heavy item up the stairs.

When Dietrich and I move a large piece of furniture up the stairs it almost always starts with a little pep talk:

"Now remember if at any point you feel like you are going to hurt your self just drop it.  Everything will be okay."

Then comes the countdown:

"K, ready? One, two, three, lift!"

Then the progress report, in-between held breaths, in as few words as possible:

"You got it?"

Then there's almost always a mini fight:

"I gotta put it down."

"Hold on"

"I can't hold on."

"What just happened?"

"You're pushing me!"

"You're holding it too high!"

"You're moving too fast!"

 "Are you okay?"

And then we finally get it upstairs and admire what a good job we did working together, and how proud we are that we are able to work as a team.

Remember this episode of Friends?

Tiny Party

Annie, Kevin, Maya and David came down to Santa Cruz this weekend for a tiny birthday celebration.
It was A LOT of fun.  Annie and Kevin made these sweet balloons and streamer garland, and made me stay downstairs when they arrived until they finished decorating.

We started the night off with Dietrich's margaritas and potato chips with onion dip (so addicting).
Then we made a fabulously easy and delicious dinner of burgers and salad accompanied by tasty wine brought by our guests :)

Maya made a flourless chocolate cake that was amazing, even better than our Whole Foods wedding cake.  She served it with fresh whipped cream and berries, the perfect combo!

It's so much fun to relax with friends, play games, talk about nothing and everything.

Here's a little snippet of our friendly girls vs.boys game of Taboo

I spent the last weekend recovering from a bad cold, and while doing so I had plenty of time to peruse one of my favorite magazines, Real Simple.  One of the recent issues I read had an inspiring feature on blush.  I love the application on this model, and one of the things that struck me about the article was that it suggested you should always apply more than you think you need.

The technique they suggested was the perfect pick me up this morning as I got ready for work after a four day sick weekend. That, along with my new Dr. Hauschka eyeliners (thanks mom!) and trusty Jane Iredale brow powder make the perfect combo for natural makeup with a little bit of pop.  I can see why they refer to it as "makeup's unsung hero." Dietrich even commented on how nice it looked :)

Happy Weekend

Image via

Happy weekend loves!  I have been fighting off a cold and it finally got the best of me today, so I opted to stay home from work.  It's a mixed blessing being sick - it was lovely to sit on my sunny couch looking at catolugues in between sips of tea and cat naps, but I also have so much that I want to do!

Here are some things that piqued my interest while looking through catologues:

I would love Dietrich to build this storage bed for us

Love this bedding bundle

Have a happy weekend!

I am very lucky to have one of the coziest yoga studios in town two blocks away from my office. They have wonderful instructors, play good music, and have the perfect 45 minute lunch time class.  There is nothing like unwinding in the middle of the day with a little bit of meditation and stretching!

I love how the instructor leads us through a series of poses that everyone in class follows in unison.  I especially get a kick out of this during tree pose, when we are all balancing on one foot, arms in various positions, some wobbling, some calmly holding still others shifting weight, but we all are trying so hard to balance on one foot at the teacher's request.  I don't know why this tickles me, but it does!  So do these pictures of animals doing yoga - especially the duck in warrior three.
